The state's growth spurt continues, and one way to see what's ahead is to look at the state's youngsters — those of school age today, and those who'll be crowding the schools in just a few years.
These maps show the hot and cold spots on the growth map, displaying the raw population growth and fastest rates of growth in two cohorts: Texans ages 4 and younger, and Texans from ages 5 to 19.
Some interesting patterns are evident over the last two years. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the number of older kids is growing rapidly, while the number of little ones is actually shrinking. Growth in the Austin-San Antonio corridor and down into South Texas is strong; the same is true of the Houston area.
