T-Squared: Reeve Takes His Leave

One of the Tribune's original and most entrepreneurial reporters, Reeve Hamilton, is leaving us — and journalism. We'll miss him a lot (but will continue to harass him daily).

Reeve Hamilton.

I’m truly sorry to report that one of the Tribune's original reporters, Reeve Hamilton, is leaving us — and journalism — to be an executive director of media relations for the Texas A&M University System.

Over the course of the last five years, Reeve has told countless higher education stories, covering university systems embroiled in politics and drama, chronicling Gov. Rick Perry's years-long push for $10,000 degrees and telling a stunning tale about the unborn victim of the UT Tower shooter

He also went well beyond his beat, writing delicious political profiles, trailing Rick Perry on the presidential trail and following Phil Collins to the Alamo.

Reeve has been a model Trib entrepreneur, populating the best political trivia game there ever was (we miss you, QRANK), and hosting the venerable TribCast, which has grown from next to nothing to nearly 55,000 rabid followers on SoundCloud.

Ultimately, Reeve is staying on his beat; in his new A&M System job, he’ll be responsible for overseeing communications to and cultivating relationships with reporters — which means all of us in the Tribune newsroom now have a legitimate reason to harass him daily.

His last day at the Trib is a week from Friday; in the meantime, he has transitioned off of the higher ed beat. Jack-of-all-trades reporting fellow Bobby Blanchard will step in to cover for him until we hire a replacement (and we have big plans; stay tuned). I’ll try to fill his shoes on the TribCast in the meantime.

I can’t begin to say how much Reeve has contributed to this operation — not just the daily newsgathering, but the culture. He has been devoted, determined and creative, and at the core of just about every hysterical moment in our newsroom. The Tribune is what it is today in part because of Reeve, and we'll forever be grateful to him for that.

Texans need truth. Help us report it.
