In the first significant exchange of gunfire in the Republican runoff for lieutenant governor, the Dan Patrick campaign has called a new attack ad from David Dewhurst "a string of lies, half truths and a rehash of events from 30 years ago."

The television ad, the first since the March primary, in which Patrick finished ahead of incumbent Dewhurst by a double-digit margin, focuses on Patrick's history of bankruptcy and tax liens.

“Six weeks before the Runoff Election and during Holy Week, David Dewhurst takes his campaign straight to the gutter. Over the next seven days, he is spending over $1,000,000 polluting the airwaves, spewing raw sewage, and personally attacking Dan Patrick. Mr. Dewhurst’s ad offers no excuse for his own record of failure to secure the border, failure to address property taxes that are driving people from their homes, and a failure to deliver a fiscally responsible budget," Patrick consultant Allen Blakemore said in a statement.

Dewhurst political director Chris Bryan said he could not confirm how much the campaign was spending on television advertising, or how long it would be on air.
