Tribpedia: Texas Border Sheriffs Coalition

The Texas Border Sheriffs Coalition is a non-profit organization of Texas border sheriffs started in 2005 by then El Paso County Sheriff Leo Samaniego to represent the issues of rural law enforcement agencies.

The organization, composed of 20 Texas border county sheriffs departments, distributes state and federal grant funds for border security operations.

Sheriffs in the group often testify before the Texas Legislature and U.S. Congress about unique crime challenges officers in rural border areas face, especially in fighting drug cartels and warding off potential terrorists.

The Coalition also is responsible for Gov. Rick Perry's Texas Border Watch Program, for which it was granted $2 million.
