Texas Legislature 2019

From staying out to declaring victory, how Dennis Bonnen ended the speaker's race in a weekend

The Republican from Angleton wasn't even a candidate a month ago. Now he says he has north of 100 votes — more than enough to win the gavel.

State Rep. Dennis Bonnen, R-Angleton, announces at a press conference on Nov. 12, 2018 that he has the support of 109 members of the state House of Representatives to assume the speakership in January 2019. 76 votes — one half plus one of the 150-member chamber — are needed.

“We felt confident Dennis was the guy.”
