Funded by private donations and Baltimore City Public Schools, a nonprofit-run summer program has been helping middle school students make up for lost time. Students who failed enough classes during the school year to be held back, come to summer classes that incorporate academic and social-emotional learning. Along with an impressive promotion rate of 84 percent, most students not only make up for the average summer’s loss in reading and math skills, they gain three months’ worth of academic mastery.
