With early voting underway, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has endorsed Colleyville Tea Party candidate Konni Burton, a Republican campaigning for the state Senate seat left open by gubernatorial hopeful Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth.
“I'm proud to endorse my good friend Konni for state Senate," Cruz said in a statement released by Burton's campaign. "She's a tireless, unwavering warrior for the conservative cause. Konni is a fighter and will serve the people of Texas well. I urge voters in her district to support her.”
Burton worked on Cruz's campaign when he was first running for the Senate in 2012. A television ad released in January by the Burton campaign also included praise from Cruz about her conservative credentials.
Burton, one of the first candidates to enter the race last year, is among five hopefuls seeking the Republican nomination in SD-10, a swing district, in the March 4 primary election. On the Democratic side, two candidates are campaigning to keep the seat under that party's control.
