  • Before he was a Texas Senator, Bettencourt was Harris County's Tax Assessor-Collector for 10 years. He also served as a treasurer for the Texas Republican Party and Harris County Republican Party.

  • Bettencourt's largest campaign donor was Michael Boylan, who has also been his campaign treasurer. Boylan works for the Houston Property Management Company and is the vice president of Zelco, Inc. He was named a "super donor" by the liberal watchdog group Texans for Public Justice in 2006 and was identified in 2014 by the Center of Public Integrity to be one of roughly 100 people in the United States who donated over $100,000 to a state political party.
