Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 78 counties Friday and instructed several agencies to increase preparedness as heavy rainfall, floods and gusty winds are expected across portions of the Texas coast this weekend.

Omar Rodriguez-Ortiz was a social media engagement fellow in the fall of 2018. His job was to help engage audiences in our politics and policy coverage across platforms, capitalizing on his bilingual and bicultural background. Omar has been published in Texas Monthly (intern), The Austin Chronicle, the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, Latino Rebels, Reporting Texas, and Burnt X. He was the social media and website editor for the Voces Oral History Project, where he helped produce its first podcast. Before moving to Austin in 2015, Omar worked as a media monitoring official for the Governor's Office in Puerto Rico. Omar completed a master's degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin's School of Journalism in May 2018. In 2012, he graduated from the Universidad de Puerto Rico at Río Piedras with a B.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language.
