Eva-Marie Ayala
Eva-Marie Ayala is a veteran journalist who’s covered Texas education for more than two decades. She began her career at her hometown newspaper, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram before joining The Dallas Morning News. As a reporter, she sat with children trying to learn after a deadly explosion in West damaged their school; listened to a teacher in Spring comfort students while her husband inspected what was left of their home after Hurricane Harvey; and examined how state and local policy impacted classrooms. As an editor, Eva oversaw award-winning coverage of Texas’ teacher certification challenges, of lawmakers’ moves impact students and of schools’ challenges to keep kids safe. She previously was assistant managing editor of the Fort Worth Report where she coordinated reporting on Tarrant County’s growth and the state’s takeover of local districts. She joined The Tribune as education editor in spring of 2026 and is based in Fort Worth. Eva is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington and currently serves as president of the national Education Writers Association. Her claims to fame are being a Super Tia, clumsy hiker and data nerd.
