Although the state initially supported recommended federal guidelines for schools to let transgender students use bathrooms of their choosing, the Mississippi Department of Education reversed its stance to align with state conservative leaders. Gov. Phil Bryant joined the chorus of protests, calling on education leaders to buck what he called federal coercion. Formal withdrawal of support will come after the board meets to discuss the situation. (The Associated Press)
