Person of Interest in Capitol Activity Now Tied to Car Fire

A man involved in "suspicious activity" near the Texas House speaker's office is also being sought for questioning about a car fire outside the Capitol last week, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman said Monday.

"The person being sought for questioning in the suspected vehicle arson Friday afternoon is the same individual involved in suspicious activity earlier in the day at the Speaker's Office," DPS spokesman Tom Vinger said in an email.

Vinger declined to provide details about the "suspicious activity" near the speaker's office — or explain what evidence tied the man to both incidents — because of the agency's ongoing investigation into both matters.

On Friday at 2 p.m., a car caught fire near the south entrance to the Capitol. Earlier that day, a white man wearing dark shorts and a ball cap was reported to DPS by legislative staff because of "suspicious activity" near the speaker's office in the Capitol.

DPS is asking anyone with information about the person of interest to contact law enforcement at (512) 472-TIPS (8477). Tips can be reported anonymously.
