Biologists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in San Marcos have collected a sampling of rare San Marcos salamanders from Spring Lake, the headwaters of the San Marcos River and once the location of the former Aquarena Springs. Twice a year, the service collects the salamanders, found only in Spring Lake and listed as threatened, and houses them in refuge facilities so that genetic diversity of the species can be maintained in case of a change in habitat.
