A billboard Democratic candidate for comptroller Mike Collier plans to put up in the hometown of his Republican opponent, state Sen. Glenn Hegar of Katy

The Texas comptroller's election may be seven months away, but Democrat Mike Collier is already raring for a debate.

Collier, who is running against Republican state Sen. Glenn Hegar, has recently begun goading Hegar to debate the issues in the race soon, rather than closer to the election when debates are traditionally held.

Starting April 21, the Collier campaign plans to install a billboard on Interstate 10 in Hegar's hometown of Katy that reads: "Glenn, why aren't you Texan enough to debate me?"

Collier sent out a fundraising email Thursday asking for donations to keep the billboard up for as long as possible.

"Sen. Hegar wasn’t shy about speaking up when he was standing in front of Tea Party meetings just a few short months ago," Collier writes in the email. "Now, with the whole state listening, he's hiding."

Hegar's campaign was not amused.

"This is a political ploy by a liberal opponent to try to seek some attention to his desperate campaign with no ideas," Hegar spokesman David White said. "Glenn Hegar has and will continue to travel across our state visiting with hardworking Texans about his positive vision for the future of our state."
