House Speakerย Joe Strausย on Friday appointed five Republicans and four Democrats to the new House Select Committee on Transportation Funding, Expenditures and Finance.

State Rep.ย Joe Pickett, D-El Paso, will chair the committee, which lawmakers voted last session to create to find ways to improve the way the state funds transportation. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has created aย corresponding Senate committeeย that is chaired by state Sen.ย Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville.

โ€œTransportation is a top priority for the Texas House,โ€ Straus said in a statement. โ€œThis committee will take an extensive, objective look at the transportation solutions that best suit our people and our growing economy.โ€

Along with Pickett, the committee’s members are Republicansย Larry Phillipsย of Sherman,ย Lyle Larsonย of San Antonio,ย Dan Hubertyย of Houston,ย Paul Workmanย of Austin andย Ron Simmonsย of Carrollton and Democratsย Armando Martinezย of Weslaco,ย Ruth Jones McClendonย of San Antonio andย Sergio Muรฑoz Jr.ย of Palmview.
