San Marcos River

Jeff Gillies of the Environmental Monitor reports on the San Marcos Observing System, which collects and analyzes environmental data in the San Marcos River watershed. The system was established to supply the data for the Edwards Aquifer Authority Habitat Conservation Plan, which restricts groundwater withdrawals in order to support endangered plants and animals. The system has also enabled the collection of a world-class data set, according to Thomas Hardy, chief science officer for the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University, who oversees the system.
