Company Drops Phosphorus From Fertilizer Ingredients

Scotts Miracle-Gro, a major producer of lawn-and-garden products, has removed phosphorus from a line of lawn fertilizer to help combat harmful algae.

Scotts Miracle-Gro, a major producer of lawn-and-garden products, has removed phosphorus from its Turf Builder line of lawn fertilizer to help combat a type of algae that has polluted U.S. waterways, as the Columbus Dispatch reports. The company acknowledged that phosphorus runoff has contributed to the problem of nutrient pollution. Algae blooms, which affect water quality, are estimated to cost coastal areas of the U.S. more than $80 million every year.
