El Paso Legislator Arrested on DWI Charge
Updated, 10:30 p.m.: State Rep. Naomi Gonzalez, D-El Paso, released a statement regarding her arrest on Thursday, saying that the recent events were "concerning" for her.
"However, I would like to say first that my thoughts and prayers go out to the other persons involved," she said in the statement. "I hope you understand, I won't be commenting further until the legal matters have been resolved."
Gonzalez added that she appreciated support from her family, colleagues and friends and said she is "committed to moving forward and continuing the important work of this legislative session."
Original story: State Rep. Naomi Gonzalez, D-El Paso, was arrested by Austin police on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and booked into Travis County Jail early Thursday morning, according to Travis County public records.
A staff member at the legislator's office said that the matter was personal and that the office had no comment.
KEYE News in Austin reported that Gonzalez, 34, was driving a BMW at Congress Avenue and Barton Springs Road in Austin when she hit another vehicle, which in turn hit a bicyclist.
Gonzalez is serving her second term in the Texas House. She defeated former state Rep. Norma Chavez, D-El Paso, in 2010.
