Car2Go is a pilot program no more. The innovative Austin-based car-sharing cooperative is opening its memberships to the public starting on May 21.

The pilot program, which started in November with 13,000 city of Austin employees, has been successful enough for this public launch to proceed. When we asked him last week, CEO Nicholas Cole stayed mum about how the company is measuring success and just how how often their tiny blue and white Smart cars are getting used in the Capital City. But the company plans to release its metrics during launch week, it says.

The public launch also comes with a party, at Republic Square in downtown Austin. That's where Austinites can register for the memberships needed to have access to the cars. But pre-registration will start online later this month. We'll keep you posted.
