2010: Newspaper Endorsements: Chron for White

"[F]ar and away the most qualified candidate to represent the party in seeking to crack the Republican lock on statewide offices."

The Houston Chronicle has endorsed Bill White in the Democratic gubernatorial primary:

In his six years running City Hall, White presided over a financial reorganization that reduced unfunded employee pension liabilities, aggressively promoted toxic air pollution enforcement, crafted innovative public safety programs, and ably directed the city's response to an influx of Hurricane Katrina refugees from New Orleans and the subsequent threats of Hurricanes Rita and Ike. In doing so he proved his executive mettle and worthiness to lead state government.

In a meeting with the Chronicle editorial board, White warned that Texas is at an educational crossroads and must do a better job of preparing young people to meet the challenges of national and international competition.

He noted the ominous fact that a smaller percentage of Texans between the ages of 25 and 35 have two- and four-year college degrees than in the past.

“Education, public and higher, is the principal business of state government,” he said. White pledged as governor to work to lower dropout rates and increase the productivity and affordability of Lone Star education.
