TribBlog: Texas Grows

According to the New York Times, census figures released today show that Texas added more people this year — 231,539 — than any other state. In fact, Texas added more people than Florida, Arizona, California, Nevada and Colorado combined. The Times reports that William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, attributes the significant growth to "a more diversified economy ... and less extreme lending practices during the real estate boom."

You may be asking (we always do): What are the political implications? Texas is on track to add three news seats in Congress, the Times says, whereas Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah and Washington are expected to add one each. Iowa, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania would lose one seat, while Ohio would lose two.
