HD-76: Chavez and Gonzalez Head to Runoff
Democratic state Rep. Norma Chavez and El Paso attorney Naomi Gonzalez will likely continue their bare-knuckle battle in the runoff next month. Gonzalez ended the night with a slight lead over the Chavez, but neither were able to break the 50-percent threshold to avoid a runoff.
HD-78: Margo vs. Moody Repeat
Second verse same as the first in El Paso’s HD-78, where Republican Dee Margo and Democrat state Rep. Joe Moody will face each other again in the November general election. El Paso businessman Margo beat first-time GOP candidate Jay Kleberg in the race to represent West and Northeast El Paso in the Texas House.
HD-52: Gonzales, Gordon Appear Headed to Runoff
Gonzales and Gordon appear to be in a dogfight, and may face a runoff. The winner will take on freshman incumbent Diana Maldonado, D-Round Rock.
HD-43: Rios Ybarra Loses to Lozano
Freshman incumbent Tara Rios Ybarra, D-South Padre Island, lost her bid for re-election on Tuesday to Kingsville businessman J.M. Lozano.
HD-7: Merritt Officially Loses
With all precincts reporting, Rep. Tommy Merritt, R-Longview, has lost his seat by just over 5 percentage points.
HD-20: AP Calls it for Schwertner
The AP calls the HD-20 race for state Rep. Dan Gattis’ seat for orthopedic surgeon Dr. Charles Schwertner, who outspent the three other candidates.
HD-102: With Most Precincts In, Carter Way Ahead
Former Collin County prosecutor Stefani Carter appears to have handily defeated Geoffrey Bailey, a consultant to T. Boone Pickens, in the District 102 Republican primary. With 92 percent of precincts in, she has 75 percent of the vote. It looks like she’ll be running against incumbent Democratic Rep. Carol Kent in the general election.
HD-101: Burkett Wins, Narrowly Avoids Runoff
Mesquite businesswoman Cindy Burkett narrowly avoided a runoff in the District 101 Republican primary, winning just over 50 percent of the vote to defeat former Mesquite Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Greg Noschese and former state Rep. Thomas Latham. She will face freshman Democratic Rep. Robert Miklos in November.
HD-105: Haldenwang Defeats Limberg
With all precincts reporting, Irving business consultant Loretta Haldenwang defeated former Texas Department of Transportation director Kim Limberg in the House District 105 Democratic primary.
