Trump chooses school choice advocate for education secretary

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he had tapped Betsy DeVos, the former Michigan Republican Party chairwoman and avid school choice advocate, to head the U.S. Department of Education.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he had tapped Betsy DeVos, the former Michigan Republican Party chairwoman and avid school choice advocate, to head the U.S. Department of Education. Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence met with DeVos in New Jersey to discuss educational standards and pushing school choice nationwide. National Education Association President Lily Eskelsen Garcia has voiced criticism of the selection of DeVos, stating that she “has done more to undermine public education than support students.” (The New York Times)
