Donald Trump’s use of military funds for border wall in California, New Mexico and Arizona is illegal, federal appeals court rules

The long-term implications of the 9th Circuit Court’s ruling were less certain, as the Supreme Court ruled in the administration’s favor in a similar case last year, and Friday’s decision only affects some of the funds budgeted for the project.

A section of border fence in Hidalgo, which runs between a national wildlife refuge and a local nature center, ends abruptly when federal land stops. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife started buying land along the U.S.-Mexico border more than 70 years ago to preserve habitat for threatened species. Now, much of that same land is bisected by the border fence.
