According to the U.S. State Department, nearly 60 percent of the more than 11,000 Syrian arrivals over the past year were children. Many of those children are enrolling in the nation’s public schools, including in Chicago; Austin, Texas; New Haven, Connecticut; and El Cajon, California, which enrolled 76 new Syrian students during the first week of school.
