Gentrification and the allure of alternative curricula attract wealthier — and inevitably less diverse — families to vie for charter enrollment spots. Some schools are trying to counter the trend by using weighted admissions lotteries that favor students from low-income families or who are English-language learners. However, legal questions abound, and charter schools are looking to state legislatures for help to clarify the legality of their diversity-focused admissions innovations. (Education Week)
