Gov.-elect Greg Abbott endorsed State Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham, on Monday for state Senate, saying she is a job creator and an advocate for smaller government and a secure border.

Kolkhorst is running against four other candidates in a special election to fill the seat west of Houston that state Comptroller-elect Glenn Hegar of Katy is vacating. The filing period for the Senate District 18 election ended last week, and early voting will begin Wednesday.

"She has stood shoulder to shoulder with our fellow conservatives – and my office – in the fight against federal government overreach," Abbott said in a statement. "The voters of the 18th district couldn’t find a better advocate to preserve our Texas values and build an even better future for our state.”

Kolkhorst has also received endorsements from Hegar and the Conservative Republicans of Texas PAC.

Her opponents include Republicans Gary Gates (who was endorsed by former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Surfside) and Charles Gregory III and Democrats Cynthia Drabek and Christian E. Hawkins.

Election day for Senate District 18 is Dec. 6.
