TribBlog: Perry Packs While Jogging

Hey, Governor, you couldn't have served up that bit of Texas color in your Newsweek interview?

October 19, 2008. Gov. Rick Perry before the IBM Uptown Classic road race in Austin, TX.

Via Jim Vertuno of the Associated Press, my favorite fun fact of the week: Back in February, Rick Perry shot a coyote with the laser-sighted concealed handgun he carries while jogging. Italics most definitely mine. (Jealousy too: You think the Governor would have served up that bit of Texas color in his Q&A with, um, a national magazine.)

Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger — loaded with hollow-point bullets — when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He'd also seen coyotes in the undeveloped area.

When one came out of the brush toward his daughter's Labrador retriever, Perry charged.

"Don't attack my dog or you might get shot ... if you're a coyote," he said Tuesday.

Later, Perry spokesman Mark Miner referred to the coyote's corpse as a "trail lawyer."
