George H.W. Bush in Fair Condition After Fall

Former President George H.W. Bush remained hospitalized Thursday, the day after a fall at his home in Kennebunkport, Maine, in which he fractured a bone in his neck.

Bush, 91, was in fair condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland and was not expected to stay in the hospital for long, his office said Thursday in a statement. He will be fitted for a brace to immobilize the injured area and will receive physical therapy, the statement said. Bush continues to have normal use of his limbs.

George P. Bush, the Texas land commissioner and a grandson of the 41st president, discussed his grandfather's health Thursday morning at a Washington, D.C., gathering of the Texas State Society, an organization of Texas ex-patriots.

“My grandmother joked that a slip and fall is not going to take out a World War II pilot," George P. Bush said.

Bush, who uses a wheelchair, has had some health problems in recent years, and was hospitalized for more than seven weeks in late 2012 and early 2013 for conditions including bronchitis.
