Three former Texas railroad commissioners have endorsed Malachi Boyuls to fill Barry Smitherman’s open seat on the powerful commission, Boyuls’ campaign said Tuesday.

The endorsements came from Victor Carrillo, Charles Matthews and Tony Garza, who served terms in the 1990s and 2000s. Carrillo and Matthews had particularly long tenures — eight and 10 years, respectively — at the oil and gas regulator, which has seen rapid turnover in recent years.

“I’m honored that they have placed their confidence in me to fight for a free market, energy independence, a strong economy, and small, effective government,” Boyuls, an oil and gas investor and former regulatory attorney, said in a statement.
