State Rep. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, a Tea Party favorite, cruised to an outright win on Tuesday night in the special election to fill the West Texas Senate seat formerly held by Robert Duncan.

The Brief: New Challenge, Same Argument Against Perry Indictments

Rick Perry's attorneys were back on Monday with a new filing in which they pursue a different path to quash the felony indictments handed down against the governor last month while relying on many of the same arguments as before.

The Brief: Texas Lands a Commercial Cape Canaveral

SpaceX on Monday chose to place its first commercial launch complex on Boca Chica beach near Brownsville. The announcement solidified Texas' leading position in the country's space program even as it transitions to one with greater opportunities for private companies.

The Brief: A New Leader for the UT System

At a special University of Texas System regents meeting on Tuesday evening, they are expected to name a sole finalist for the system's next chancellor. And their choice is expected to be Admiral William H. McRaven.

In McRaven or Fisher, a New Kind of UT Chancellor

The two candidates to replace outgoing UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa — Admiral William H. McRaven, commander of the United States Special Operations Command, and Richard Fisher, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas — are neither a product of state politics nor of academia, the typical backgrounds of the heads of university systems in Texas.
