First in The Blast: Larry Wallace Jr., mayor of the Austin suburb Manor, is running for Congress as a Democrat in 2022.
"I learned the concept of servant leadership from my family and honed it while serving in the US Army: putting people first, holding oneself accountable, and solving problems," Wallace says in a statement. "Those are the values I've practiced as mayor and will continue to exercise in Congress."
Manor is currently located inside Texas' 10th District, represented by Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin. The district boundaries are likely to change before the 2022 election due to redistricting.
Wallace became Manor's first Black mayor when he took office in 2019. He previously served on the City Council. An Army combat veteran, Wallace retired from the military in 2017.
McCaul was a national Democratic target last election cycle and defeated his challenger, Mike Siegel, by 7 percentage points.
