U.S. Senate candidate and former ESPN college football analyst Craig James has reported raising more than $1 million — 74 percent of that total from himself — in the first three months of the year.

James took in about $268,000 in donations from others and invested $750,000 of his own money into his campaign, according to documents released by his campaign today.

The campaign reported spending more than $493,000 and having nearly $525,000 cash the campaign has on hand.

We know that raising money is difficult in this environment, but Craig’s support is clearly growing,” campaign manager Corbett Howard said in a statement. “And after Craig’s stellar performance during last Friday’s debate, we expect the money to really start rolling in.”

James' funds raised were lower than his three leading competitors in the Republican primary, all of whom revealed some details of their first-quarter results last week. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst led the pack with $1.66 million in individual contributions. Former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz was close behind with $1.3 million raised, followed by former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert with nearly $1 million, which included $500,000 from Leppert himself.

Sunday was the deadline for the candidates to report their campaign fundraising and expenses for the first quarter of the year to the Federal Election Commission.
