The major party gubernatorial candidates' 30-day campaign reports are now available online, offering political observers more detail about their fundraising from July 1 to Sept. 23.

What jumps out is the disparity in the timing of their spending. Gov. Rick Perry, who reported $10 million in the bank, spent just $3.9 million. His Democratic opponent, Bill White, spent much more: $11 million. That's the reason White has much less money in the bank when the reporting period ended. But it doesn't necessarily mean the Perry camp has a big financial advantage; it may have simply spent the bulk of its money in the last seven days — after the filing deadline — while White purchased ads earlier, to run later.
