Former House Speaker Tom Craddick, R-Midland, collapsed in the Capitol this morning while laying out a bill before the House Transportation Committee. His office sent out a statement saying Craddick “lost his balance and fell to his side, hitting his head as he fell.”

The statement says Craddick has been recovering from a leg problem, and was recently taking pain medication for an infected tooth. His office says he is conscious and was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure. "EMS does not consider the situation serious," the statement says.

The statement indicates the longtime Midland representative was sitting up and making jokes as he left the committee hearing room this morning.
