Colonias Look to Drainage Study To Relieve Flooding

Colonias — border communities that lack basic services — are looking to a new study funded by the Texas Water Development Board to create and implement drainage designs to relieve flooding that results in contaminated water. Thousands of colonia residents live in areas that have been designated as having the "highest health risk," with rates of infectious diseases such as hepatitis A, rubella, shigellosis, flea-borne typhus and rabies that are two to four times the average in the state. (Texas Observer)
