Two recent studies have cited evidence that wastewater from "unconventional" oil and gas production was present in nearby surface waters. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey, University of Missouri and Duke University, who sampled water and sediment upstream and downstream from an underground injection disposal site used in oil and gas production, concluded that activities at these disposal sites could affect adjacent surface water quality. The studies were published in "Environmental Science and Technology and Science of the Total Environment." (USGS)
