The Tribune built this application using records submitted by cities to the Texas Department of Transportation. Some cities didn't complete all fields in the forms. Rendering maps using this type of government data can be tricky, especially given the fact that street names vary. We've tried to make sure the intersections, data and images are accurate, but please let us know if you spot errors or have questions.Term Definitions
- Estimated Revenue
- The statute governing red-light cameras in Texas restricts fines to $75. We calculated the number of citations by this charge, and estimated that cities would recoup about 70-percent from motorists.
- All Red Duration
- The length of time after the light turns red that every light at the intersection remains red to allow the intersection to clear.
- Intersection Crash
- A crash occurring within the area embraced within the prolongation of connection of the lateral curb lines, or, if none, then the lateral boundary lines of the roadways of two roadways which join one another at, or approximately at, right angles or the area within which vehicles traveling upon different roadways joining at any other angle may come in conflict; Or a crash in which the first harmful event (1) occurs on an approach to or exit from an intersection and (2) results from an activity, behavior or control related to the movement of traffic units through the intersection.
- Right Angle Crash
- Crash involving two motor vehicles approaching at an angle prior to impact.
- Rear-End Crash
- Crash involving two motor vehicles traveling in the same direction and same lane prior to impact.
- Other Crash
- Crashes not defined as right angle or rear-end.
- Red light related crash
- Crash occurred as a result of a driver disregarding the stop and go signal.
- Crash occurred as a result of a driver running red signal.
- Crash occurred as a result of a driver failing to control speed and colliding with the rear of another vehicle slowing at a steady yellow or red signal in anticipation of stopping.
- Crash occurred as a result of a driver following another vehicle too closely as the struck vehicle was slowing for a steady yellow or red signal in anticipation of stopping.
- Crash occurred as a result of a driver failing to yield right of way while making a right turn at a steady red signal.
- Non-red light related crash
- Crash did not occur at the intersection.
- Both drivers claim to have had a green signal and no independent witnesses are available to substantiate ones claim.
- Both drivers had a green light and yet one failed to yield the right of way to the other while turning either left or right.
- A rear end collision occurred and the description of the crash indicated that the preceding vehicle was stopped due to traffic or for the red signal.
- A rear end collision occurred and the description of the crash indicated that the trailing vehicle was unable to stop due to mechanical failure or result of nature (rain, snow, fog etc).
- The crash involved only one vehicle, a vehicle and an animal, a vehicle and a fixed object or a vehicle pedestrian/bicyclist unless the collision involved the driver disregarding a stop and go signal.
- A rear end collision where both vehicles were stopped for the signal and rear vehicle accidently let off the brake or the rear car accelerated rapidly after the light turned green and struck the other.
- A rear end collision where the driver suffered a medical emergency or medical condition that contributed to the crash.
