We're hiring a news editor
The Texas Tribune is a nonprofit, nonpartisan digital news organization that is recognized as a leader in self-supporting journalism.
We are seeking an Austin-based news editor who will bring a sharp eye toward covering breaking news and helping with enterprise coverage.
In this Austin-based role, the news editor will be primarily responsible for ensuring that the Tribune remains the go-to source for breaking news on state politics, policy and other issues of statewide interest. This person must be quick at spotting stories of importance to the Tribune’s audience and working with reporters and our audience team to deliver that news quickly and in an engaging way. While that aspect of the job will be key, this editor will also be empowered to manage a group of beat reporters, helping them strategize their coverage and editing their enterprise work.
Working with the rest of the Tribune’s editing team, the news editor will help chart the course for much of our long-term coverage.
The perfect candidate for this position is someone who is unflappable in breaking news situations and able to assign, edit and even write breaking news stories speedily and with a sharp eye for accuracy and fairness. This editor must be able to identify important stories, deploy the necessary resources strategically and work seamlessly with various teams across the organization. This person should also be well-versed in AP style. Reporters and editors across the newsroom will depend on the news editor for guidance not just on breaking news but on their politics, policy and accountability-driven enterprise coverage.
— Oversight of day-side breaking news coverage, including assigning and editing stories, posting on social media and occasionally writing breaking news posts
— Line editing of next-day and longer-term stories
— Coaching and nurturing a team of reporters
— Communicating with other editors on coverage strategies
— Collaborating with other departments, from audience to art to data visuals
— Editing other daily Texas Tribune content, including newsletters, news releases and events programs
Skills must include:
— Terrific news judgment
— A passion and talent for jumping on breaking news
— Impeccable reporting and writing skills
— A strong familiarity with journalistic ethics and libel law
— Ability to conceive of and foster nontraditional storytelling
— Ability to motivate and coach reporters of all experience levels
— A firm grasp of AP style
