The Texas Tribune, the state’s go-to source for Texas politics and public policy news, is hiring an Executive Assistant.
The Executive Assistant (EA) position will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) but will support the Editor in Chief (EIC) and other members of the senior management team (SMT). As EA, you will play a critical role in supporting leaders of the Tribune in a range of areas, including the following: operational and administrative oversight, management of workflow throughout the organization, and administrative support of the Board of Directors.
The salary for this position starts at $65,000 + depending on qualifications.
Your responsibilities will include:
Leadership and Management
- Assist the SMT in managing workflow throughout the organization to ensure that top priorities receive an appropriate level of focus and subsequent implementation.
- Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the CEO informed on all critical and time-sensitive issues.
- Disseminate information and communicate directives on behalf of the CEO; respond to both internal and external issues that may arise; facilitate communication across all staff and Board members.
- Debrief the CEO on the content of internal meetings, outcomes and action items as necessary.
- Work to solve problems and deal with issues before they bubble up to the CEO.
- Ensure that the CEO is fully briefed and prepared for meetings and events.
- Work closely with the CEO, the EIC and members of the SMT to ensure the appropriate management of their calendars.
- Make travel arrangements, as needed, for the CEO and the EIC and members of the SMT
Board of Director Governance
- Act as the Board liaison, providing material necessary for Board meetings.
- Assist in preparing quarterly reports for the Board
- Draft, edit and summarize high-level correspondence and memoranda for the executive office; proofread and revise documents as the CEO requests.
- Assist with the CEO’s internal and external communications, both written and spoken.
- BA/BS degree and 6 or more years in a similar role; experience working for a nonprofit and/or branch of government is a plus OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- A strong interest in the mission of The Texas Tribune
- Strong communications and presentation skills
- Three or more years of experience in staffing one or more principals.
- Transparent and high-integrity work style.
- Experience and skill working with a Board of Directors.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff.
- Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence, including funders, partner agencies and volunteers.
- Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.

The Texas Tribune office is located in downtown Austin, steps away from the Texas Capitol building. This position is based in Austin, but we will consider candidates who are based elsewhere in Texas. We have colleagues in the organization that come into the office on a regular basis and colleagues that are based in various cities throughout the United States.
