The Texas Tribune, the state’s go-to source for Texas politics and public policy news, is seeking an afternoon/evening news editor to join our breaking news team.
This editor will be primarily responsible for assigning and editing breaking news between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. CT. Responsibilities include taking over stories handed off by dayside beat editors; assigning coverage of late-breaking stories; scheduling the home page during the evening hours and for the following morning; and coordinating with other editors on coverage planning. The editor will work closely with a reporter, a copy editor, a photo editor and an audience editor who work the same hours.
This editor will also edit The Brief, our flagship morning newsletter, and The Audio Brief, a short daily podcast on the previous day’s news developments. The editor should be an aggressive but calm news leader who is comfortable monitoring news developments — such as court rulings, official announcements and primetime speeches — and deciding which to cover. The position requires superb communication skills and the ability to work with journalists across disciplines.
The perfect candidate for this position is someone who is calm and unflappable in breaking news situations and able to assign, edit and occasionally write breaking news stories speedily and with a sharp eye for accuracy, fairness and journalistic standards. This editor must be able to identify important stories, deploy necessary resources strategically and work seamlessly with various teams across the organization. This person should also be well-versed in AP style. This job is perfect for an organized utility player with strong news judgment who enjoys elevating journalism of all types and wants to take the first step toward newsroom leadership.
The position reports to the News Editor.
The salary for this position will vary depending on qualifications; the minimum is $75,000.
- Coordinate with dayside news team to ensure that stories get published promptly
- Complete editing on stories handed over from dayside editors
- Monitor late afternoon/evening news developments
- Assign coverage, in coordination with other editors
- Write and edit accurate, compelling display copy
- Monitor other nonprofit news sites for articles that we can co-publish
- Keep the Tribune website updated
- Occasional travel and work on nights, weekends and holidays
- BA/BS degree and 5+ years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- Terrific news judgment and talent for jumping on quick-turn enterprise writing
- A demonstrated ability to work quickly and under tight deadlines
- Impeccable editing, reporting, fact-checking and writing skills with a strong familiarity with journalistic ethics and libel law
- Strong communication and story-telling skills using AP style and ability to research and fact check information on your own using excellent writing, reviewing, and editing skills
- Spanish-language skills are preferred

The Texas Tribune office is located in downtown Austin, steps away from the Texas Capitol building. This position is based in Austin, but we will consider candidates who are based elsewhere in Texas and can travel occasionally to our Austin office. We have colleagues in the organization that come into the office on a regular basis and colleagues that are based in various cities throughout the United States.
