State Senator Eliot Shapleigh is an attorney and managing partner of Shapleigh and Wyatt, P.C. He was first elected to represent SD-29 in 1997.
A fifth-generation El Pasoan, Shapleigh is the current chairman of the Subcommittee on Base Realignment and Closure, a position he has held since 2004. He also serves as vice chairman of the Veterans Affairs and Military Installations Committee and is a member of the Senate Health & Human Services, Nominations, Transportation and Homeland Security Committees. Shapleigh also serves as chairman of the 10-state Border Legislative Conference and sits on the Sunset Advisory Commission.
Shapleigh has authored or sponsored more than 500 bills. As author of the Texas Military Preparedness Act in 2003, the senator was a major contributor to Texas' preparation for the 2005 round of base realignment and closure.
Senator Shapleigh graduated from Rice University in 1974 and served in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, West Africa until 1977. He graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 1981. He is the proud father of Zoe and Ben Shapleigh.
