text size A A A

Bob Perry is a Houston homebuilder and one of the most generous political contributors in the nation. He gives to both Democratic and Republican candidates, but the majority of his contributions go to Republican candidates and 527 groups.

He's the founder of Perry Homes, based in Houston. The company reported revenues of $420 million in 2002.

Perry began making political contributions after a request from former Gov. Bill Clements. By 2002, he was the biggest donor to the Texas Republican Party with more than $900,000 in donations.

Perry came to national prominence during the 2004 presidential election as the largest donor to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, according to Talking Points Memo. Swift Boat Veterans for Truth was the 527 group that ran negative ads against Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, questioning his service in Vietnam. Perry also gave $5 million to the Economic Freedom Fund in 2006. In the 2008 Republican Primary, Perry supported Mitt Romney.

Perry is known for avoiding the spotlight, and he rarely attends high-profile events. He lives with his wife in the Houston suburb Nassau Bay.
