The Texas House today passed a bill allowing Texas Department of Transportation to study whether to increase the speed limit on certain highways to 85 miles per hour.

Texas already has some of the highest limits in the country for certain rural segments of interstates: 80 miles per hour. We wondered how other states compared, so we created this simple interactive map using speed data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit group known for its scientific analysis of death, injuries and damage data on the nation's major roadways.

The map visualizes speed on rural sections of interstates, with darker shades representing higher speeds.
