Guest Column: How Conservative is David Dewhurst?
Has Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst been a reliable conservative as presiding officer of the Texas Senate? It's clear that he's been a successfully stalwart Republican. Whether or not he has been sufficiently conservative though depends on your definition. As with beauty, conservatism is often in the eye of the beholder.
With its Texas-size personalities, supermajority requirements and informal traditions, the Texas Senate is not an easy institution to run. During his tenure in office, Dewhurst has skillfully balanced the preferences of the Senate’s 31 members to pass legislation that has both allowed the state to operate smoothly ...

the state doesn't operate smoothly and efficiently, and we sure as heck aren't a model for the nation on basics like healthcare, health insurance, public education, water and air protection, humane prisons, foster care programs . . . We sure don't need that style of leadership in the U.S. Senate!

Two soulless men with pathetic records. Not much choice between them. The TEA Party likes Cruz and Perry likes Dewhurst.

Yeah, Mary; and every state that has what you consider a 'model'
on YOUR definition of 'basics' is rapidly going bankrupt.
Dewhurst is first and foremost, a wheeler-dealer; political principle is very secondary to him. In Austin, that means being somewhat conservative (NOT entirely). In Washington DC, that would mean being a LOT LESS conservative.
If you want principled stands, you vote Cruz. If you want the best deal-cutter, you vote Dewhurst. But it is the Deal-cutters that continue to allow us the slide off into national insolvency.... because, to them, only making the next deal matters.

Mike, I voted for Dewhurst. Cruz is nuts. We don't need anymore nuts in office. We have enough of them already. Get the NUTS out of our state government.

That Dewhurst's conservativism can be measured this way iis still a premise that has no validation, leading to a poor conclusion. Jones still puts Wentworth too far to the right, leading me to further doubt his entire system.

I'm voting for Paul Sadler.
