Video: Houston's Annise Parker on The Colbert Report
Houston Mayor Annise Parker stopped by Comedy Central's The Colbert Report on Wednesday night.
She was not there, as host Stephen Colbert joked, to pick up basketball star Jeremy Lin, who was recently acquired by the Houston Rockets after a headline-grabbing season with the New York Knicks. Instead, the discussion focused on the city of Houston.
Colbert was particularly interested in how a city in Texas could possibly have elected a mayor like Parker, who is openly gay. Parker was particularly interested in discussing her city's economy and growing job market.

Houston has jobs, sure. But are they good jobs? Mayor Parker, please help Houston janitors living in poverty, in this city of so many millionaires. Ask Houston office building owners to do the right thing and help hard working janitors get out of poverty!

I would think that if she was aware of that specific problem, she would address it. From what I have read and seen about her, she is a no nonsense official and truly cares about all the citizens of Houston. Send her an email or letter with your concerns. I look forward to the day when she runs for a state or even a national office.

This is good news:
Mayor Parker Calls for Renewed Negotiations in Janitors' Strike
Mayor Parker issued the following statement today regarding the ongoing janitors' strike:
"I am calling on the contracting companies to go back to the negotiating table. Their unwillingness to talk has left the union with no other choice but civil disobedience. That is not good for the City of Houston or our economy and it is not how we do business in Houston. We work hard, we work together and we treat each other fairly. The union has made good-faith offers. Now it's time for the janitorial contractors to sit back down at the table to work out an agreement that is fair and just."
