Campaign Staff Abandoning State Rep. Norma Chavez
Three sources close to the campaign of Democratic state Rep. Norma Chavez in Austin and El Paso today are reporting that some of her closest local campaign staffers are abandoning ship just a week before the April 13 election. Lilly Ruiz, who has been with Chavez for years and also has worked in her Capitol office, is among those who have reportedly quit out of frustration with the candidates' most recent statements — calling her Democratic opponent Naomi Gonzalez a "lesbian, gay woman" at a campaign forum.
It's an inauspicious start to early voting in the runoff election for Chavez ...

Norma Chavez knew what she was doing by bringing up Naomi's sexual preference. Despite living in a democrat-dominated community, where a Republican doesn't stand a chance (unless you are a Haggerty), she knows all to well that this city is as conservative as it can get. Sexual Orientation is not something we discuss because it is a topic that is not up for discussion. El Pasoans do not accept homosexuality as a preference; they see it as a menace to sociey; a plague just waiting to infect our children. Anyone remember the Chico's incident? Either way, SHAME ON YOU, Norma! Couldn't you find a REAL issue to debate?

It's "sexual orientation", not "sexual preference." Saying "sexual preference" is wildly offensive and just plain wrong.
