The Brief: Top Texas News for May 1, 2012
The Big Conversation:
Planned Parenthood has scored a rare, if brief, victory in Texas.
U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel on Monday blocked the state from excluding the health care provider from the state's Medicaid Women's Health Program. A rule pushed by Texas Republicans would have removed 49 Planned Parenthood clinics from the program starting today.
Yeakel said the removal of Planned Parenthood from the program would put thousands of low-income Texas women at risk of losing services like cervical and breast cancer screenings, birth control and STD testing.
“The record demonstrates that plaintiffs currently provide a critical ...

Helooooo. No taxpayer funds go to provide abortions.
Debbie Spencer via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Morons, taxpayer money doesn't pay for abortions and and you're reading the law wrong. But, then, you will read it however you want. I'm glad you will all be voted out when the time comes. I hope that people will vote against all of you who have attacked women's rights for many election cycles to come so that we can wipe out the draconian laws you have passed.

Protecting life? How many executions take place every year?
Johnna Johnston via Texas Tribune on Facebook
I wonder which part of it they don't understand. Women who CHOOSE to have an abortion PAY FOR THEIR OWN abortion. No other funding is used. Why do the politicians waste our time and money on this? Why don't they focus on helping the children that are alive and educate them instead of testing them to death????

Texas also has a long history of using the death penalty. Texas also has a long history of legislatively punishing women and minorities. I guess the executive branch, in the person of Governor Perry, is tired of missing out on all the fun.

They protect the fetus but kill the infant/child by defunding women's health care. Nuts.
Beverly Voss via Texas Tribune on Facebook
why doesn't Texas reform the criminal justice system and leave women alone ? Perry and Abbott forget women vote to? even in Texas ? "defend the will of Texans and our state law" ? how about a vote on that ? let the Truth be Known...

get out of my uterus, my body, my decision

We "protect life" by making it harder for poor women to obtain abortion services, prenatal care, health insurance for themselves, regular healthcare for their families, lousy schools for their kids, rising tuition rate, but lots of prisons, strict mandatory drug sentencing and the highest rate of state sanctioned executions. What a life!!!
Jill Bergene via Texas Tribune on Facebook
That staement is blatantly false, morally offensive and utterly patronizing. History of protecting life....what a joke.

Protect life as long as it is not a woman's

Let's not forget the polluters like Koch Brothers who contribute to health probs in Texas and elsewhere because they're allowed to get around EPA regulations by our legislators.

This Texan is damn tired of supporting Rick Perry

Get out of that RENTAL !!!! move in with Abbott

I don't understand why it's fasley called women's rights. What about the baby's rights? The baby has it's own DNA. It's horribly sad how hard hearts have become for selfish reasons.
Chris Thibodeaux via Texas Tribune on Facebook
I don't care if you're pro-life or pro-choice, idiot legislators have no business telling Medical Doctors what procedures they have to do, PERIOD! They whine all day about Obama regulating health care, then turn around and do the same thing. Shameful.
Jeremy Flowers via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Why does a fetus, zygote, embryo's 'rights' supercede a woman's rights, Kelly? It isn't falsely named. "It's horribly sad how hard hearts have become for selfish reasons" ... Sounds rather contradictory to your perspective.

We hear a lot about freedom of speech and right of free association under the constitution that is being violated. Usually, they are wrong. But when a case slaps you in the face, conservatives are kind of quiet. When you require an organization to certify that they:
“do not promote ‘elective abortions’ and that they do not ‘affiliate’ with entities that perform or promote elective abortions"
The Constitutional violation seems obvious.

This makes me mad.. Taxpayer money never paid for abortions!
Luisa Inez Newton via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Yeah, right, Texas Republicans care so much about "life" they continue to fight the EPA to support polluters...
Chris Thibodeaux via Texas Tribune on Facebook
@Karen- The Koch brothers aren't getting around anything, they are using the system exactly how their friends in D.C. designed it. Regulations are how Large, wealthy companies keep their smaller competitors and the new start-ups in line, nothing more.

So given that the Democratic party is nonfunctional in Texas and no third party is in a position to challenge the Republicans either, what in tarnation are we going to do about this?
Mimi Purnell via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Texas has become a "failed state" under it's current leadership, and is headed straight for the "Axis of Evil", makes this fourth generation Texan so, so proud!!
Mimi Purnell via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Wonder if we'll soon see a statistic that counts the # of women dying from a botched abortion against the # of inmates put to death by our "life loving" AG/Gov! Same difference-it's a death sentence anyway you look at it!

http://www.texastribune.org/library/data/texas-womens-health-program-providers/ Why doesn't the TT link to its own data? Take a look at the map to see how easily PP has already been replaced.
