The Big Conversation:
Herman Cain's exit has left an opening for Rick Perry, but the governor may have already lost his chance.
Perry, hoping to recapture some of the conservative support he once claimed, made a play over the weekend for supporters of Cain, who suspended his campaign on Saturday amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
"Herman Cain’s appeal was that of a Washington Outsider — someone not beholden to the entrenched Beltway interests, and who hasn’t spent his life cutting deals at the expense of conservative principles," Perry writes in a letter posted on his campaign website. "As ...

How is Romney any less of a "Washington outsider"? And also, I've never really understood how that talking point is still working. And both parties use it every election cycle. Shouldn't we want someone in office who at least knows SOMETHING about the mechanisms of government and how Washington "works"? Or doesn't work? It's hard to fix something if you're not familiar enough with the problem. I don't want any doctor operating on me that is a "medical industry outsider".

He has successfully proven that with enough money and influence any ignorant country bumpkin can grow up and become Governor of Texas.

Mary lou you are obviously not a Texan otherwise you would know that Texas is doing better than the rest of the country.

As to Sonja's point-the reality is that the success of Texas in many areas-is in spite of not because of the leadership of Rick Perry. Our State has been successful because of a dynamic business community that has existed for years, particularly an energy sector that has always been a step ahead. The engines of real growth have been our cities--Mayors and civic leaders in Austin, Houston and Dallas have done a great job steering the state while the Gov. looks from afar. The levers he controls, education, healthcare, human services--an utter disaster. Perry has always been all hat and no cattle. It took a national stage for many of us to realize the magnitude of his incompetence.

Right Sonja. One of the highest populations of people in poverty, worst school system in the nation, highest dropout rate, least amount if insured children. We're doing better? How do you define better? More jobs at McDonald's?
Taylor J. Harris via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Jay, let me explain something to you. The private sector is ALWAYS the engine for growth in a free market economy. Saying that Perry isn't responsible for the success because he hasn't done anything proves the point. The more government stops interfering, regulating, subsidizing the private sector the more it can grown. Texas' economic success relative to other states is a direct result of the constraints he has placed on govt., without which that dynamic business community could not be as free to succeed.

Yes, indeed, sir! "Texas' economic success relative to other states is a direct result of the constraints he (Perry) has placed on government without which business community could not be as free to succeed. ”

But mostly Oil and Land

IF I recall Venus it was Henry Cisneros a Democrat who made sure San Antonio was the capitol of jobs at McDonald!

Venus you also make the point for in state tution for the children of illigals...if they do not receive an education these children will continue to be a drag on the Texas economy. The drop out rate is mostly from the illigals...
Sergio Hernandez De Santos via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Bravo! Blame the wetbacks for the drop out rate, that's a new one WOW!

I meant "illigals"

It matters little who gets out now, Perry's toast! Try as he may, he will never recover!
David Starkey
As bad as his numbers are, I wouldn't count Perry out just yet.
I was prepared to do so until he ran his self effacing TV ad.
"It was damned near perfect", as we would say in Texas.
Don't be too surprised if he squeaks into the top 3 in Iowa.
