The Brief: Top Texas News for Dec. 12, 2012
The Big Conversation:
Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday opened the latest front in what's likely to become the biggest abortion battle in Texas next year.
Perry, speaking a crisis pregnancy center in Houston, said he would support a bill that would ban abortion in Texas after 20 weeks.
"Let me be clear," Perry said. "My goal and the goal of many of those joining me here today is to make abortion at any stage a thing of the past."
The measure, dubbed the "fetal pain" bill, is based on the research of some scientists claiming that fetuses can feel ...

that would be illegal. Perry doesnt get it, just like he fails to comprehend planned parenthood or that people deserve health insurance.

Only thing I agree with Perry about is that abortion is murder, and abortionists are serial killers of unborn children.

This is a ploy to keep the right wing base happy as Perry plans another run for guv and then president. He will, once again, embarrass Texas.

I am reminded of what Molly I. once said about bad dogs and lesson learned 'round here...

Free birth control and morning after pills are the only counterbalance to this idiot. Perry and his fundamentalist cronies need to go. They are a scourge on society.

I want to make him a thing of the past

With all the inexpensive means available to keep from getting pregnant and the morning after pill the use of abortion in any case except to save the life of the mother or in the case of a fetus that is dead is just stupid. Just as stupid as calling for "free " pills. Those of you who think there are others who need $ help not to get preg. set up your own org. to take care of them and let me know where to send the check. But leave my tax money out of this and stop the use of abortion as ameans of birth control.

@Joe Estep . . . like most of your mindset, your tax dollars do not go towards the funding of abortion. Here's a link to help clear up your misunderstanding of the law. It's called the Hyde Amendment. Besides, only something like 17% of Planned Parenthood's budget goes towards abortions, the rest is used for family planning and general health services that are available to both men and women.
I don't think that most women use abortion as a "means of birth control" either. I'd much rather pay for someone's abortion than have an unwanted or deformed child come into the world and often likely to be a welfare baby at that. If you're so worried about how your tax money is spent abortion is a much cheaper alternative.
The government and men in particular need to stay out of a woman's body. It's none of their business. And, if you and your ilk are so concerned about the issue, then I say "Free Sterilization to Men." How does that sound huh?
Like Hillary Clinton said "It's not about pro-abortion but pro-choice." It's a woman's right to choose, not Perry nor anyone of his mindset's right to take away an individual's right to choose as provided under the law. P.E.R.I.O.D.

Birth control prevents pregnancy. An abortion ends pregnancy. Therefore abortion isn't birth control. You can't have an abortion unless you're pregnant.

$80 a month isn't "inexpensive" Joe.

In 8-10 years the demographics of this state will look so different, we'll have a good shot at voting these good ol' boys out of office forever.
Perry doesn't even believe the things he's saying, he's just pandering to his soon to be outnumbered base.

I think the organization being referred to above is called Planned Parenthood. Abortion should (must) be safe, legal, and rare. I refuse to return to the 1950s when the wealthy would send their daughters away for "treatment" and the poor girls and women died in botched back-alley abortions. I cannot believe anyone would want a return to that. No way.

OK Joe, we won't use your tax money to pay for birth control but you have to pay extra to pay for all the resultant pregnancies. Having a child costs way more in the long run than not getting pregnant. It's pretty easy math unless you support the GOP.
Alana Carpenter via Texas Tribune on Facebook
As before 1073, abortion even if Perry makes termination illegal, it will not halt it. It will just become more dangerous for women
Bill Eaves via Texas Tribune on Facebook
@Cynthia you have been drinking the kool-aide or smoking way to much marijuana.........
Jeff Bear Joubert via Texas Tribune on Facebook
When men can get pregnant then maybe we should have a say in this issue. Until then let women think for themselves and do for themselves. I haven't heard a woman come out against viagra or any other erection meds or against penile implants or anything that makes helping her get pregnant if she want easier so Perry STFU please. And don't start with the "Christan" crap until you so some of those traits to the rest of the population not just your moronic base.

"The measure, dubbed the "fetal pain" bill, is based on the research of some scientists claiming that fetuses can feel pain at the 20th week of development."
The name of the bill has NOT been dubbed the "feral pain" bill, that's what you are calling it to change the narrative. It's the PreBorn Pain bill, pretty sure you won't, but why dont you try accurate reporting.

Perrys full of it.. IUDs have been used by Religious people for years . Even those who believe life starts apon conception. Bu using this device they are having a abortion by their theroy. So will Perry be out lawing IUDs as well? Cynthia Medicade pays for IUDs so isnt that Tax dollars going to abortions? Sure it is. Now heres the kicker we get all the "Religious" people to as the bible states to only have sex to reproduce we wouldnt be having this conversation now would we? Not all Abortions come from people in nonreligious families but im sure that the rate would drop if the Religious actually lived as they want others to..
Samdavis
@Bill Eaves: So what exactly does "drinking the kool aid" mean? Cynthia has a well thought out accurate statement using facts and figures unlike what those in the GOP are doing. It's just pure stupidity on your part to criticize here statement without offering something to refute it. Almost like you are an avid FOX viewer.
Russell Crawford
There are 6 scientific laws that prove abortion saves life and that pro lifers cause death. The laws also settle the "life at conception" debate.

Perry 2016 won't happen no matter how many anti-woman right wing Conservatives he panders to. The last election has shown that women won't stand for it. It's unfortunate there ARE women that still supported this. There are young women that simply don't know about how the world was before birth control was halfway accessible, and older women who are brainwashed into thinking women should be silent and subservient to men.
Abortion on demand and without apology or shaming or lies from people like Perry or Texas Right to Life. If safe and legal abortions are a thing of the past, watch countless Texan women become a thing of the past as they die from illegal abortions. If a woman wants an abortion, she'll get one with or without a doctor. That's what these people fail to realize.
